Mera Peak is one of the most alluring trekking peaks in Nepal as it involves a culturally stimulating journey through picturesque villages and forests combined with the non technical climb to the 6476m/21,246 ft Summit.


Highlander’s Mera Peak expedition climbs the Mera La route and comes at the end of 3 week-long trekking and acclimatization program. Our climbing programs is designed to give you aspirations to experience Himalayan expedition life, this trip will enable you to truly savor the realities of expedition and many Peak climber has been inspired to continue onto other high mountains. The views from on the Mera (and even from high camp) are spectacular – the Himalayan giants of Mt Everest, Lhotse and Makalu (ranked 1, 4 and 5 among the world highest peaks) surround you, with Cho Oyu and Kanchenjunga to either side and a multitude of intervening glaciers.

This 20 days climbing is designed for those who want to have more time in the great Himalaya and perfect in regards to acclimatization program.

Day 1: Kathmandu - Bhandar

Early in the morning we take 11 hours scenic drive to the Bhandar, the gate way to Everest.

Driving Hours: 12 Hours

Heights: 2200

Day 2: Bhandar trek to Sete

After having breakfast we walk downhill till Kenja that takes two and half an hour. Then we walk stiff uphill walk through the village till Sete

Walking Hour: 6 hours

Heights: 2575 M

Day 3: Sete trek to Junbesi

After having breakfast we walk uphill through dense forest until Lamjura pass (3400 M.). Then by downhill walk, we will finally arrive at Junbesi.

Walking hours: 7 hrs,

Heights: 2675 M

Day 4: Junbesi - Nunthala

We trek to the Everest View point and go down to the river and up to Rigmo village. Then again we trek down to Nunthala.

Walking hour: 7hrs,

Heights: 2200 M

Day 5: Nunthala - Bupsa

After having the breakfast we trek down through the village till the river Dudhkoshi. After crossing the river we trek uphill to Bupsa.

Walking hours: 6 hrs,

Heights:2400 M

Day 6: Bupsa - Lukla

Early in the morning after having breakfast, we walk uphill and continue walk through forest and walk down hill to the river then and final up hill takes us to lukla.

Walkinghours: 6 hrs,

Heights: 2840 M

Day 7: Lukla - Chuttange

Get a hearty breakfast and get ready for a heart starter! Today's walk is quite short but it's a 4 hours ascent through the forest to Chuttanga.

Trekking time: approx 4 hours

Heights: Chuttanga 3050m

Day 8: Chuttanga - Chattra

Feels like yesterday, except you get somedownhill as well. You start the morning with a 4 hour ascent to pass of Chattra La at 4300m (La means pass). From here you can enjoy the incredible mountain views before your 2 hour descent into Chattra.

Trekking time: approx 6 hours

Heights: Chattra 4100 m

Day 9: Chhatra - Kothe

This morning you start off with something different – downhill. The trail descends for about 5 hours through mixed forest down to theriver. From here you ascend again for about 1 hour, following the river all the way to Kothe. You will see good mountain views today as well and you get your first view of Mera Peak.

Trekking time: approx 6 hours

Heights: Kothe 3500m

Day 10: Kothe - Thagnak

From Kothe the trail follows the river upward all the way to Thagnak, our stop for the night. Along the way you have amazing views of Mera Peak, Mera La Glacier as well as the surrounding mountains. Our stop tonight is a small Sherpa village and you can have fun learning more about Sherpa culture here.

Trekking time: approx 4-5 hours

Heights: Thagnak 4300m

Day 11: Rest day for acclimatization

Today is for letting your bodies rest and acclimatize. If you are feeling good you couldgo for an acclimatization walk, or explore the village.

Day 12:
 Thagnak - Khare

Today'strail is all aboutgoing up. Youascend for about 2hours to Di Kharka and thenyou have a steeperclimb for about 2 hours to Khare. To takeyour mind off the ascent, you have amazingviews of MeraPeak, Kusum Kangaru and many more. A goodday to enjoybeingin the alpine zone and get a good rest at yourovernight stop in Khare.

Trekking time: approx 5 hours

Heights: Khare 5000m

Day 13: Rest day in Khare for acclimatization

Today is another day to rest and let your body adjust to the altitude. Use the time to check your climbing gear or do a day hike from Khare.

Day 14: Khare - Mera La

It’s about one hour cliff walk and then ice climb to Mera La.

Trekking time: approx 5 hours

Heights: Khare 5400m

Day 15: Mera La - High Camp

From here its gradual uphill climb to high camp. On this day you could have magnificent mountain view including world highest Mt. Everest., Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-oyu etc.

Trekking time: approx 3 hours

Heights: Khare 5800 m

Day 16: High Camp - Mera Peak - Khare

You start your summit bid early in the morning, with the ascent taking about 5 or 6 hours. The last 100 metres are a steep climb to the summit and then, there you are, standing on top of Mera Peak! On top of Mera Peak you will have magnificent views to the surrounding mountains. After taking your photos and getting your breath back, you return back down all the way to Khare, to make sure your body recovers the climb.

Day 17: KHare trek to Kothe

Today you retrace the trail to Kothe.

Trekking time: approx 6 hours

Heights: Kothe 3500m

Day 18: Kote to Chattra

Today you retrace the trail to Chattra.

Trekking time: approx 7 hours

Heights: Chattra 3800m

Day 19: Chattra to Lukla

Today you retrace the trail to Lukla and, as this will be the last time you see some of your crew, you will no doubt have a party to celebrate a successful expedition.

Trekking time: approx 9 hours

Heights: Lukla 2840m

Day 20: Lukla to Kathmandu

This morning you will board the Lukla flight again, this time bound for Kathmandu.

Heights: Kathmandu 1350m, Lukla 2840m

Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of fellow travelers can all contribute to changes. We will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!

Visa for Nepal

All nationalities except Indians require a visa for Nepal which could be obtain from Embassies abroad or on arrival at Tribhuwan international airport in Kathmandu.

You need to have one passport Photo and following fees in US dollars to obtain the visa on arrival.

1. USD 25 for Tourist visa with Multiple Entries for 15 days.

2. USD 40 for Tourist visa with Multiple Entries for 30 days.

3. USD 100 for Tourist visa with Multiple Entries for 90 days.

4. USD 2 per day for visa extensions.

Note: These days most of these items can be purchased in Kathmandu. There are now several leading brand stores selling their own equipment and there are many stores selling cheap imitations and some well established local stores selling under their own labels. Ask your tour leader if you’d like some advice about where to go to get any gear. If you need to do any shopping for gear, please let us know with enough time to do this before leaving for trek!


All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. Helicopter evacuation is provided in emergency cases but please make sure that you insurance cover the cost of the evacuation. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc.


Trekking trails vary from wide, rode-like avenues to narrow, slippery paths built out over enormous drops. In many places, a fall from the trail would be fatal. One must pay attention at all times to where you are placing your feet. Be especially careful not to move while looking through the view finder of your camera!


The flight to Lukla are with small aircraft and the flight depends on the weather condition, so there are chances of flight being delays for hours or even cancelled due to the weather. You will only be allowed to carry 10kg as luggage and 5 kg as a hand bag and extra charge will be charge by airlines for excess baggage. 


Being in a hurry in the mountains can be deadly. Acclimatization is the word used to describe the adjustments your body makes as it ascends to higher altitudes.

Ascending slowly, with appropriate rest days and drinking plenty of water is one of the best ways not to get Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

You should not plan to go to high altitude if you have heart disease, difficulty breathing at sea level or are pregnant. You should consult your doctor about any known medical conditions if you are considering trekking in high altitude (over 2500m).

Avoid sleeping pills, alcohol and smoking while at altitude as they tend to decrease breathing and lead to AMS. Data indicates that drinking 3-4 liters of fluids (water, soup etc) per day to avoid dehydration helps in the acclimatization process. Never try to attempt to go higher up if you have altitude sickness, stay either in the same elevation or if got worse trek to the lower elevation.

The first aid kit carried by your guide includes Diamox and he/she is trained in the identification of AMS symptoms and their treatment. You MUST take their advice.

You will be given a comprehensive briefing about what to expect and what to do to avoid AMS before embarking on your trek.


Do not forget to bring some Nepalese rupees for drinks or snacks that you might purchase on the way. You will be surprised by what is available on the popular trekking routes now! The amount to carry on the trekking routes depends on the area you are going to trek in, so please ask your guide for advice.

Tipping is now common in Nepal but there is no strict rules about how much the tip should be. You could tip if you are satisfied with the service.


While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the very environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, people and wildlife rely on this environment for their drinking water and food supply and many places are of enormous religious significance to local people.

There are many ways you can help to conserve the environment of the area in which you trek. Here are some simple tips:

-Pick up any litter along the trail

-Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces when not in camp, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source

-In camp, when using a toilet tent, you may deposit paper in the hole, but ensure the hole is at least 30cm deep and make sure it is at least 50m away from any water source

-Do not make campfire, nor consume food cooked on wood fires; your crew uses kerosene stoves to help conserve the local forests

-Drink boiled/treated water instead of mineral water as the plastic is not recycled

-Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora

-Ensure all rubbish is packed out (or burnt/buried if appropriate)
