July 14, 2008 - Upcoming Fest - Full Moon
Festival at Gosainkunda (16th August)
The full moon festival falls on 16th August this year. As usual, Hindu
pilgrims and shamans (Jhankris & Dhamis) from all over Nepal, will flock to
the holy lake of Gosainkunda, the former for a purifying dip in the
lake'ssacred water of the lake and the latter to initiate the novices into
their fold. The shamans sing and dance the whole night. According to Hindu
legend Lord Shiva, a powerful hindu diety, created this lake by piercing the
glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having
swallowed the Kalkut poison that threatened to destroy the world. The large
rock in the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine.
It is also said that an underground channel carries the water from the lake
to a tank at the Kumbeshwor Temple in Patan. So those who can't make it to
Gosainkunda, take a dip on the temple's tank .The Brahmins change their
sacred thread (janai) on this day. (Check Langtang/Helambu
